This family home in a mature housing estate in Dundrum, Dublin, was reconfigured to improve the relationship between its existing living spaces and the long rear garden. The new work takes the materiality and geometry of an existing side extension as a starting point, extending the house while retaining a clear relationship with the original structure.
A generous utility room and pantry are relocated to the centre of the plan, making use of an existing rooflight and freeing the rear of the house for a new kitchen and dining space. These spaces open onto the garden and connect diagonally with the existing rear living area. The resulting plan creates a series of interconnected but distinct spaces, allowing different areas of the house to be occupied independently while maintaining a sense of continuity.
Rooflights set over an exposed painted-timber structure bring natural light deep into the extension, while generous glazing on two sides opens the kitchen and dining spaces to the garden. In-situ concrete seating extends the living space outdoors.
At the front of the house, a small porch addition provides an external seat and new cloakroom, complementing the larger intervention to the rear.
